Issue No. 99 December 2008
WINTER EVENTS: Robin Delves is to reduce his wine lake by offering to host a Wine and Cheese event at Burwains Sailing Club on Saturday 17th January noon till 3pm.
Tickets cost £7 per person which includes wine, cheese, sandwiches and broth and a free draw for 4 prizes of 6 bottles of wine. Club members are asked to contact Maureen Whitaker re sandwiches to be brought by members on the day. It is essential that numbers attending be conveyed to Robin as soon as possible so that sufficient food can be catered. Robin assures us there will be no shortage of wine.
The following people are holding draw sheets and tickets:
Robin Delves 01535-642565
Peter Dewhurst 01282-864826
Peter Dowdall 01729-823442
and Geoff Whitaker 01282-865565.
Anyone willing to sell tickets should contact one of the above, Barbara Dutton can provide extra tickets and draw sheets as required.
This event is to offset the cost of the new Dawson Balls so please sell tickets and come and support it yourself, bring your friends, your neighbours your enemies..anyone who will assist Robin in draining his wine lake.

ANNUAL DINNER Friday 27th February 2009 to be held at Colne Golf Club 6.30pm for 7.30pm (tombola etc set up from 6.30pm and the bar will be open) £17 per person. See menu attached. Numbers and cheques to Peter Dowdall by 30th January latest.

Here we are with our cap out again, but attached you will find the Membership renewal form. There is no increase in subs as agreed at the AGM, but they are due by 1st January 2009. Please help your Treasurer (who has taken on more duties:see below) by being prompt.

Abdul Ahmad has resigned from the committee as he has been asked by the CA to rewrite the Coaching Manual. We congratulate him warmly on this honour, but his resignation leaves a big hole which must be filled by club members. Abdul didn’t only work tirelessly on the lawns, he was Club Secretary and Minutes Secretary So, please step up if you wish the club to continue efficiently and offer to do some work.
In the interim Peter Dowdall has taken on most of the jobs of Secretary but he does not have email access, Geoff Whitaker has agreed to act as liaison with outside groups wishing to use the club facilities: eg Church groups etc and Barbara Dutton has picked up the Minutes. We also need volunteers to learn how to use and care for the new mower and be available to mow on a rota basis, there is a small payment for this. Robert Hall could do with an understudy white liner for the times when he cannot be available. Maureen Whitaker is also looking for more help with catering as since her fall she has not regained full use of one arm and so cannot take on the burden of catering for every tournament on one day her self. Abdul has agreed to maintain the web site as long as people send him results, reports etc he will not have time to chase things down.

Groundwork: Lawn 4 which has a large boggy depression in its centre and the Lawn 3 boundary are to be slowly raised through top dressing. Relaying the drains in Lawn 4 and re-turfing proving too costly for the club at present. Worm casts will continue to be removed by drag matting, when dry. The lawns need to be mowed to 10mm thereafter. The committee is looking into the costs of a trench drain in front of the pavilion to relieve standing water there.

OPEN DAY set for Saturday 13th June, let’s pray for good weather and not too many conflicting events.

Tournaments 2009
John Beech Easter 10-13th April (4 days) Manager David Maugham if free
Golf Croquet 18-19th April (2 days) Manager Abdul Ahmad
‘B’ Level 16-17th May (2 days) Manager Liz Wilson
Advanced 6-7th June (2 days) Manager Ian Lines provisional
Midweek 7-10th Jul (4 days) Manager John Filsak
Bank Holiday 29-31st Aug (3 days) Manager to be appointed
All England Area Finals 5-6 Sep (2 days) Manager Peter Wilson
You will see from the above that is 19 days of catering. It has been agreed that a light tea of cakes and scones is all that is needed after a good main meal and this will be at a charge of £7.50 to include all hot drinks. To lighten the load on the few frequent caterers we are asking that club members offer to act as day stewards: one to open up in the mornings of tournaments, switch the boilers on, meet and greet and make a hot drink if required: one to clear up after the tea and close up the club switching off boilers, lights etc and making sure all is secure. Caterers will then arrive in time to set up and serve lunch, wash up and set out the tea and leave. Members who are willing to cook but not be present on the day can feed the freezer(by arrangement with Maureen), members who do not want to cook can offer to assist caterers. Helping out at tournaments is a very nice way to meet other members of the croquet family.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS and meetings 2009 Peter & Ann Dowdall, Geoff & Maureen Whitaker, Robin Delves, David Pollitt, Peter Dewhurst, Walter Flattery, David Venn, Robert Hall, John Filsak, Roy Berry, Barbara Dutton and Jeff Perris as lawn consultant.
