Happy New Croquet Year to you all.
The funeral of Betty Brierley, former Vice President of the club for many years, was held on 18th December. For anyone who was unable to attend, or wishing to mark the event, donations to:-
The Alzheimer’s Society c/o Hartley Foulds Funeral Services, 230 Colne Road, BURNLEY will be appreciated.
A few items of Betty’s croquet equipment have been given to the club.

New Members:
Application forms for 3 new members are on the club notice board.
Sadly two current members will not be joining us again for health reasons: Bill Marshall and Rhonda Beharrel. We wish them well.

Bury Croquet Club Annual Dinner is to be held on Fri 29th February at Bury Golf Club, £17.50 pp, menu and contact details on the noticeboard. I wonder if this date was chosen by the single ladies in the club

WINTER LAWN CLOSURE:
The lawns will be closed until 15th March 2008 for maintenance, although little work has been possible due to incessant rain and Jeff Perris has also been ill, we wish him well. Please volunteer to help if you are able once the weather relents. Fertliser needs spreading once the sun comes out. Contact Abdul.
However, Abdul has been chosen to referee the World Golf Croquet Championships in South Africa during March. We congratulate him on this honour.
This also means that we will need help to undertake the myriad tasks he performs for the club during his absence, not least the setting up of the hoops for the John Beech Handicap Tournament and overseeing the lawn work.

21-24 March John Beech Handicap Tournament Manager David Maugham

All other matches, meetings etc will be displayed in the pavilion and on the website shortly. The North East League have yet to finalise and one or two matches clashing with each other need to be re-arranged. Please speak to the Captains.
Internal Doubles Competition will be held on Sun 27th April. You will be allocated a partner from those entering. Bring your own lunch and get those bookings in to Abdul for a fun day. Don’t forget he’s away in March, so tempus fugit!------------------------------------------
At the AGM it was decided to remove the ‘Over 50's’ part of the title from the Midweek Tournament. However, for this year we were too late to get the amendment into the CA yearbook. A copy of the yearbook is on display in the pavilion. Please do not remove it! Robin has pointed out some errors including the Jan 4th cut off date for entries and two prize holders awarded wrong groups.

Open Day 2008 will be held on Sat 14th June from 10am. Helpers will be needed to set lawns, teach and cater, as well as man the book stall etc. Prayers for good weather will also be appreciated.
The club now has 72 members of whom 6 are honorary members and 4 non playing members. 42 members have paid their subs. Finances are sound although we have some big bills coming up. Fund raising is important.

Indoor Croquet at Earby Community Centre This can be arranged on Thursdays from 10am - 4pm. The mat is at the Community Centre but the hoops have to be collected and returned to the pavilion. Ilkley players are keen, so support from Pendle would be appreciated. Bring your own lunch, there is a good dining area. £12 room hire to be shared among the participants. This requires a little forward planning so 1 week’s notice appreciated. Contact Abdul or Hugh Armitage.
EQUIPMENT David Venn has repaired the bracket in bin 1, slightly different arrangement, David welcomes comments. He has also repainted all the bisques but some need sharpening, suggestions please. Large coloured pegs are also still sought at a good price!
CATERING Maureen Whitaker will send round a list at the Annual Dinner for volunteers to cater on the tournament dates, so bring your diaries ladies and gentlemen please.
FIRST AID Can all members read the First Aid book in the office and familiarise themselves with basic rules. Re the CPP we have been advised that we must put the responsibility for under age children attending on a parent or guardian.
