Issue No. 106 October 2009
RESULTS:

David Pollitt led his team to victory in the Secretary Shield, The first time in the club’s history and only one of three north of England clubs to win. Congratulations to all who played . We have also won the North West Handicap League so are automatically entered into the Secretary Shield competition for 2010. In other leagues we have achieved a mid way position.

Groundwork:

JanMcLardy led a team of volunteers after the committee meeting to lower the Cemetery Rd hedge. She would like to do the same with the other boundary hedges and asks for volunteers to contact her, either by email or telephone, to join her Croquet Groundforce team. She is offering to wear a T-shirt if you need a Charlie substitute to encourage you. We shall also need people with garden forks to spike lawn 4 and then distribute sand....for those old enough, a sort of Wilson, Kepple and Betty day.
All lawns are closed for the winter except Lawn 4 which will be available weather and work permitting, please use your common sense.

EVENTS: :

David Barrett gave an excellent session, lots of advice and he was disappointed that we do not as a club use handicap books and bisques when playing socially.
We need to do this in future so that handicaps can be amended and players get used to the system. First time being picked for a match can be alarming if you haven’t used either your handicap book or bisques.........so get them dusted off, anyone who hasn’t got one can apply now ready for the new season and occasional use in the winter.
Friday 13th November (a date you cannot forget) Supper and board games, with a couple of fun quizzes with prizes. 7pm. £5 per person. Learn a new game, show off your prowess if you know how to play, come and have fun. Numbers would be useful for catering :-
Let Barbara Dutton know if you intend to come.01282-863800 or the email.

FINANCES:

We have had a lot of one off expenditure this year with drainage, new hut, Dawson Balls etc and a drop in income from less lawn hire and a reduced number of subs.
Please assist by ensuring that heaters, boilers and lights are all turned off after matches and events and that the office lights are not left on, nor the main lights turned on and then left while no-one is in the pavilion. Open the curtains! We are not going to the government to bail us out just yet, but a bit more income would be good.

The John Beech pictures on display in the pavilion: it was a very close thing but after a vote it was decided to use the colour picture of John taken at Open Day. It needs to be transferred to photographic paper, so could the owner of this picture oblige or forward it to B Dutton who has some paper.

COMMITTEE MEETINGS:
Next committee meeting Monday 16th November at 10am. Items to GW/BD by 3rd Nov for Agenda.
