09 May 2010 Trevor Wood Triumphs at the Pendle Golf Croquet Handicap Tournament 8/9 MAY 2010 Report by Ron Welch The Club attracted fourteen competitors to this event, four members and ten visitors, including young Joel Pearson, Pam Pollitt's grandson, stepping in as a last-minute replacement. Two blocks of seven required each player to play six games on Saturday plus a 19-point quarter-final for those qualifying. It was a long, cold day, but they struggled through with minimal grumbling. Our substitute, having picked up a mallet for the first time since last year, managed to qualify and even win his quarter-final but, unavailable on Sunday, had to retire. This gave Ros Pimlott of Bowdon a second chance: and she became a semi-finalist along with the other two joint winners of her block, Martin Wroughton and Derek Buxton, both of Ashby. The quartet was completed by the unbeaten winner of the second block, Trevor Wood of Ilkley. Sadly, Jonty Parkinson had to retire sick after lunch. Thanks to the intervention of Jan McLardy he was got into the hands of the NHS. On Sunday we had two close semi-finals, Trevor Wood beating Martin Wroughton in three games and Derek Buxton overcoming Ros Pimlott after a morning-long three game struggle. The final was more one-sided, Trevor triumphing. The doubles, field reduced to four pairs, was settled by lunch time, Jan McLardy and David Pickard of Ilkley being the winners, narrowly topping the all-play-all block.
