Hamptworth exact revenge in the Secretary's Shield Semi final encounter.
Report by David Pollitt.

TEAMS:

Hamptworth: B Fisk -0 .5, J Lacey 0 .5, R Smith 10 and V Stillwell 12
Pendle: R Schofield 2.5, A Webb 4, D Pollitt (capt.) 7 and R Delves 12

The semi final brought us up against Hamptworth who we played last year, in this competition, at Pendle. This time we had a journey of 300 miles to play. We set off on Saturday at 9am from Robin's, arriving at Buckers Hard, Beaulieu at 3.30pm. We had been invited to stay at our President's (Mr Fort) residence as a friend of Robin's. What a place! Set in 28 acres on the side of the Solent with his own jetty to his boat. Three of us stayed in a cottage and Robin in Ted's house. We were all invited to dinner on Saturday evening which we all enjoyed and appreciated very much.

Sunday morning we had an 8am start as we were approximately 30 miles from Hamptworth, where we arrived before our opponents at 9.15am. The lawns were on two levels, two on the top being fast and two on the lower level which were slow, these last two had been made in the last 12 months.

In the morning Roger and Robin played in the doubles, David and Andrew both played singles. Andrew was the only winner. We went into lunch 2 - 1 down. We were all given a Sunday lunch in the Country Club's Restaurant, this would be are last proper meal until we arrived home at approximately 11pm. In the afternoon David was the only winner, so the final result 5 - 2 to Hamptworth who are now in the final. We had beaten them last year 4 - 3 at Pendle, but their lawns were either too slow or too fast. Perhaps the previous day's travelling and the fine dining had taken its toll!

A special thanks to Robin and Andrew for their driving over 600 miles also for Ted Fort's hospitality.
