Pendle defeats Shrewsbury 6-1 in the CA Mary Rose Knockout Tournament at Home.

Pendle: Peter Wilson (2.5), Liz Wilson (2.5), Roger Schofield (3) & Andrew Webb (4.5)
Shrewsbury: Peter Dork (2), Robert Dodds (2.5), Sean Sheridon (3) & Brian Christmas (4.5)

Shrewsbury arrived at the lawns in a grey drizzle to find them in wonderful condition and with the hoops set very well.

Having been baked in the heat wave the lawns drank up the water and were very pleasant to play on. Captains Roger and Brian decided no time limits for the first round all games single banked.

Liz & Peter finished the doubles against Robert & Peter with a couple of big breaks so these four then started their singles matches well before lunch. Then Roger beat Brian and Andrew beat Sean completing the first round with Pendle three points to nil up over lunch.

As the second round continued the two Peters had been having a scrappy game when Peter W found some form getting ahead and making a cross wire at 3 back. When Peter D missed Peter W finished the game and took Pendle over the winning line. Of course this did not diminish the determination of our players to win the remaining individual matches. Liz and Robert were involved in a tense match with all clips ending on the peg. Liz looked favourite as she was joined up, but Robert made a long roquet and went on to win by two points. Roger came from behind to peg Sean out. Sean was on Rover but Roger took a nice chance to finish off with a three ball break. For the second time today Andrew was stuck on Peg and Rover for some time as Brian chipped away at his lead. In a very tense finish Andrew produced a trademark long roquet and completed the game in fine style.

Pendle now face Nottingham in the second round.
