Pendle overcomes a defiant Hampworth to reach the Finals of the Secretary's Shield event. PENDLE Team: Andrew Webb 4.5, Abdul Ahmad 6, David Pollitt (Capt) 7 and Robin Delves 10 HAMPTWORTH Team: Richard Stevens 7, Richard Smith 11, Trevor Angel 12 and Vic Stilwell 14 Before play started we wondered if we would be able to complete the day's play before the rain came in. The lawns had only just recovered from heavy showers during the previous days. Hampworth (near Bournemouth) had travelled over 300 miles the previous day, to stay over night locally,so that they would be fresh for the morning's play. In the morning Abdul set the tone, with an early victory +16. Pendle lost the doubles and David matches by close margins. David pulled back 17 hoops in the last half hour. In the afternoon Abdul had another good win whilst Robin was back in the pavilion early, not having scored and his opponent still having a bisque in the ground. David won a close game to make it 3 games each. It needed Andrew to win, whilst the other players looked on, which he duly won +10.
