Pendle & Craven C.C. thrashed by Middlesbrough in the East Pennine League Match. Report by John Filsak. We opened the defence of our East Pennine League title on May 30, travelling to Middlesbrough full of hope, but returning having been thoroughly thrashed 6-1. A new rule this year enabled games with a handicap steps difference between players of more than five to be played to advanced handicap rules. Roger Staples took advantage of this rule to trip up a jetlagged Robert Essler (he arrived back from a business trip to Australia the day before). Our only success was in the doubles. Results:. Robert Essler (2) & John Filsak (2) beat Charles Waterfield (0) & Roger Staples (8) +5t Andrew Webb (4.5) lost to Mike Akester (14) -16 Howard Bowron (12) lost to Walter Sanders (16) -23 John lost to Charles -6t Robert lost to Roger -24 Andrew lost to Walter -15 Howard lost to Mike -5 | |||||||
