4 October 2008 Mary Rose - We nearly repeated last year’s feat at Wrest Park! Report and Photograph by John Filsak
We came within three hoops of defeating Surbiton for the second year
in a row to win the Mary Rose, but they were three hoops too far and
Surbiton went home with the trophy.Once again it came down to the last match to finish, this time between Liz Wilson and Bob Stephens. Liz was for 4-back and peg against Bob's rover and peg. Bob got in and pegged Liz's forward ball out. Liz managed to run 4-back, but was unable to take advantage of a subsequent error by Bob. So the game, and the match was won by three. Earlier Robert Essler (2) and John Filsak (2.5) had won their doubles match fairly comfortably (+17) against Mary Knapp (1.5) and Graham Brightwell (1.5). On the other lawn Liz (3) was well behind against David Mooney (1.5), but when he failed in a triple peel attempt by clanging 3-back, Liz got an opportunity and pulled the game right back. David managed to hang on and win by three. Meanwhile Peter Wilson (2.5) got well ahead of Bob Stephens (3.5), but Bob hauled him in and won by five. So we went in to lunch 2-1 down. The first of the afternoon games to finish was Peter's against David (David +18). Then Robert beat Mary +9, quickly followed by John pegging out to beat Graham +15. So with the match 3-all it was all down to the exciting finish between Liz and Bob. We were disappointed, of course, but felt we had put up a good defence of our title. Here's to next year's campaign. | |||||||
