Pendle & Craven heralds the New Short Croquet Season with a narrow win over Llanfairfechan Report by Catherine Parnell and photograph by Carolyn Ratcliff

L-R Roy Berry, Graham Lewis, Carolyn Ratcliff, Val Kenyon, John Snowden, Kathryn Schofield, Catherine Parnell and Jack Pattenden. Good food, good company and a spot of croquet to boot – what better way to spend a Saturday. Today saw the start of the Short Croquet League for Pendle in a home match against the lovely Llanfairfechan. Both teams were in good spirits despite the chill wind and threat of hail storms. After the first round the Pendle team were in the lead 3-1, a very promising start. At lunch we were still ahead 5-3 and all was to play for in the afternoon.

Going into the last round at 8-4 (still a trifle full from lunch) we were at least guaranteed a draw; Llanfairfechan really pulled out the stops (Val winning her first ever game) and won not one, not two but three in the last round. Thankfully John saved the day and saw us with a 9-7 victory as the sun shone on the close of day.
