John Beech Memorial Tournament Report by Barbara

Clearing the snow.
Prelude

Jonathan Hills wrote on the Nottingham Croquet Website:
"Any play in the Easter Tournaments? Or did snow stop play?"

Dave Maugham (Manager of the Pendle Tournament) replied:
"Pendle lost maybe 3 hours this morning. The players mostly helped out clearing the snow from two lawns, which were then noticeably faster than the one lawn that was playable where the snow melted naturally (the other two were water-logged for the rest of the day)".

"I daresay there'll be photos in due course".

Report

With cold winds, rain, sleet and snow to contend with the players did well to complete their matches, even playing after dark. On Saturday players rolled huge snowballs around to clear the lawns for play and then had an early lunch to warm up.

Pixie Alice with her tail up! Pixie Robin

One wild, windy, snowy day
The Pendle Pixies came out to play.
They walked about the grassy beds
With pixie hats uppon their heads.

Pixie Andrew Laying a carpet of Snow

Those playing red and blue and black
Had clear targets to attack,
Those pixies playing brown and green
Had big balls that were plainly seen,

Pixie David Snowmen 26 - Dave 0!
But those who chose the pink and white
Had great difficulty with their sight,
The balls would slip right out of view
Camouflaged by their wintery hue.

Pixie Jacob 1.30 pm All Done! Still, Pixies are a hardy race
Not easily given to losing face,
Or forced by enemies to give up
Their fierce desire to win the cup.

So out into the storm they strode
From the pavilions warm abode,
Crying, "The fearless Pixies of Pendle are
Defying hypothermia!"
