06/06/08 Jeff Perris'Report on the Lawns to the June 2008 Committee Meeting.

I appraised the lawns on Friday 30th May 2008

    Observations and comments

The lawns were quite dry at the time of my visit with little growth being made. I advised that the planned mowing that day was suspended until the Monday. In long dry spells when the grass is making little growth, it is permissible to leave the occasional cut if a decent playing surface prevails.

Lawns 1 and 2 presented the best grass cover and playing surface followed by lawn 5 and then 3. Whilst lawn 4 was the poorest sward and surface on the day of my visit, the main problem was a significant low area in a central position. This low area will need the turf removing and stored nearby, additional suitable soil imported to make good levels and then the preserved turf relaid. A similar exercise is needed in a low corner on lawn 2. Such levelling work needs to be done in October.

The features which detracted from the appearance of the turf at the time of my visit were

    • Old flattened worm casts which had created small bare patches
    • Some course procumbent bentgrass, mainly on lawn 5

The old flattened worm casts were not really affecting playing characteristics and recent scarifying had removed some of the flat bentgrass.

I spoke to Abdul on the telephone whilst I was on site and advised the following:-

    To note

    1. A dressing of the weed and feed in stock should be delayed until the lawns had been rewet and softened by a reasonable amount of rain. The fertiliser should then be spread evenly at the recommended rate in subsequent showery weather.
    2. Continue to lightly verticut (scarify) once a month, but only if good growth is taking place (suspend during any prolonged hot dry spells).
    3. Continue cutting at 7mm but do not hesitate to raise the mowing height temporarily to 8mm if the grass is under stress in any long hot dry spells.
    4. Worn areas around hoops or larger areas of flattened worm casts need to be pricked with the nailboard and the some topdressing containing grass seed hand rubbed into the prepared surface. Make sure you maintain levels. Some direct topdressing could also go ahead on any small localised low areas to build up the surface
    5. An autumn/winter feed will be needed in late September/early October.
    6. The levelling work on lawn 2 and 4 needs to be done by a contractor in early/mid October. I will talk to a couple of small companies about this and ask for a price. The latter could be significantly reduced and the job speeded up if a party of club members could assist (wheelbarrowing soil etc.).

I will produce an updated report on the lawns in early September

    28/04/08 All fertilised today.

The morning rain gave way to a sunny afternoon. The usual Monday afternoon crowd stayed away. Conditions were ideal for applying the spring/summer feed and weed compound. Abdul Ahmad ceased the opportunity and just did that! It took 9 bags and roughly 3 hours to complete the task.
    TOP

25/02/08 All lawns marked out today.

Not quite the gin clear skies of the recent days. It was a blusterry overcast day. The rapidly approaching John Beech Handicap Tournament has hastened the lawns preparation programme.

Geoff Whitaker ably assisted by David Venn and Abdul Ahmad marked out the corners positions of all the lawns. Full advantage of available space was taken; and, Lawns 1, 2 and 5 were repositioned. The task took roughly 4 hours.
    TOP

    12/02/08 All lawns fertilized today.

With the uncertainty of weather looming large a firm decision was taken yesterday to fertilize the lawns this afternoon. Conditions were ideal again. The overnight frost had cleared. The lawns were sparkling under the sunlight blue skies.

Peter Dowdall, Robert Hall and Abdul Ahmad applied 10 bags of the autumn/winter feed to the lawns. The still day and the distinct shading of freshly mowed grass made the task easy. The job was completed in an hour. A little rain soon will disperse the granules and hopefully the John Beech Tournament will be blessed with perfect playing surface.

    11/02/08 All lawns cut today.

It was a glorious winter afternoon. The warm sun beating down since 7.30 this moring had repelled the overnight frost. The grass was dry. The conditions were perfect for mowing. The East boundary on Lawn 4 adjacent to the drains was still soft and wet. The rest of the ground was reasonably firm. There was a good grass covering everywhere.

Geoff Whitaker and Abdul Ahmad took nearly 3 hours to mow the entire playing surfaces and the spare ground around the lawn areas. The Dennis was positively purring on its first outing since undergoing the annual service during the winter. It sliced through the grass giving an even cut. 3 wheelie bins full of cuttings were shaved off the worked area. The freshly mowed lawns looked magnificent in the bright sunshine.

29/11/07 Jeff Perris'Report on the Lawns to the 2007 AGM.

I last looked at the Lawns about 3 weeks ago. All were generally in satisfactory condition for the time of year.

There was some variation in the quality of the turf and playing surface from Lawn to Lawn. For example Lawn 1 is the weediest, Lawn 5 is the wettest with a central low area whereas Lawn 5 has displayed weak areas this past late summer and autumn. In the case of lawn 5, however, some excellent work by Abdul and helpers has produced major improvements, which should result in much better conditions for next season.

Bearing in mind that maintenance is carried out by volunteers and the fact there are limited resources (particularly machinery), very good progress continues to be made on the Lawns. One simply has to contrast conditions now with those that prevailed some 2-3 years ago. Drainage remains reasonably good.

Nevertheless, there is still some way to go and it will remain crucial to sustain present commitment and investment.

In the remaining winter months it will be important to ensure:
    • Occasional mowing as necessary to remove any excessive growth made during mild spells. The Dennis mower should be set at 10mm at this time of the year never letting the grass grow any longer than 13-14mm
    • During dry spells, disperse the worm casts which are such a nuisance at this time of the year. Use the drag mat or the back of a springbok rake.
    • Probably it will be necessary to apply some autumn/winter fertiliser in late February if suitable conditions prevail to try and boost early growth and grass density for the first tournament (which is particularly in 2008).
    • When growth hopefully improves in March slowly reduce the mowing height to 7-8mm and then eventually 6-7mm in April.
Later in the spring, the first of the spring/summer fertiliser treatments will be needed.

I will advise on further maintenance during the spring period. In addition before Christmas I will survey the corner of Lawn 2 where it appears that the land falls away. With the levels data, the nature and extent of level discrepancies will become evident and the best way to tackle the problem much clearer.

19/11/07 Remedial work carried out on Lawn 5.
Work commenced at 1 pm. The weather this afternoon was continuous light drizzle.

    Volunteers:
Barbara Dutton, Walter Flattery, Geoff Whitaker, Roy Berry, Hugh Armitage and Abdul Ahmad.
    Work done:
Geoff Whitaker brought 10 bags of sharp sand for the job in his trailer. A large army of volunteers turned out with their garden forks ready to address the drainage problems at corner 1 of Lawn 5.

The soft ground conditions forced change in the approach. It wasn't feasible to spike the ground with garden forks and fill the resulting holes with sharp sand.

Instead slits 9 inch apart were made in the turf approximately 5 inches deep. The resulting trenches were filled with sharp sand. The worked area was roughly smoothed over with a rake. Finally it was spiked with the fork. Hopefully the rain and frost will level the ground over the coming months.

    Work was completed by 2.45pm.

    06/11/07 Lawn 1 lightly scarified.
It was a bright afternoon. A Service Engineer came from GGM Lawncare, Colne.
The Dennis had an engine service carried out on site. Cables, belts and chains were adjusted. The cutting adjustsments were finely tuned.
Tested the machine and mowed lawn 5 at 10mm setting. Then changed the cassettes and scarified Lawn 1 at a depth of roughly 5mm. Machine functioned efficiently.
The Allett was taken away to the GGM Workshop for servicing. It'll have a full engine service carried out. Cables, belts and chains will be adjusted/replaced as required. The bottom blade will be checked. If required the bottom blade will be replaced and the cylinder will be ground to new blade setting.
    Volunteer:
    Abdul Ahmad.

02/11/07 Lawn 1 hoop areas repaired and fertilized.
    It was overcast but dry.
    Volunteer:
    Abdul Ahmad.
    Work done:
Cut and removed approximately 20 cm squares of worn turf at hoop positions. Cut similar sized turf from outside the lawn boundary and patched up the worn areas. Scarified hoop areas with a garden rake.Scattered some seeds and lightly top dressed the worked areas.
Finally applied 1.25 bags of autumn fertilizer on the lawn.
    TOP

    31/10/07 Lawn 2 fertilized.
There was a slight drizzle in the air. A little lawn maintenance was carried out in between last bit of practice on lawn 1 double banked and final 2 games of golf croquet.
    Volunteer:
    Abdul Ahmad.
    Work done:
Scarified hoop areas and corner 2 on lawn 2 with a garden rake. Scattered some seeds and lightly top dressed the worked areas.
Finally applied 1.25 bags of autumn fertilizer on the lawn.

16/10/07 Lawns 4 and 5 mowed and fertilized.
Work started at 12.15 this afternoon. It was overcast but dry.
    Volunteer:
    Abdul Ahmad.
    Work done:
The two lawns were mowed with the Dennis set at 9mm. The conditions were reasonably firm on the ground and made mowing realtively easy.
4.5 bags of the autumn fertilzer were then evenly spread on the two lawns.
The work finished at 3.45 p.m.
    TOP

    12/10/07 Lawn 4 scarified.
Work started at 10 this morning. It was overcast but dry.
    Volunteers:
    Walter Flattery and Abdul Ahmad.
    Work done:
The lawn was scarified twice in the prescribed fashion. The wet conditions made the job difficult. The scarifying cassette clogged up with mud and had to be regularly cleaned. A wheelbarrow full of debris was removed once on every single trip up and down the width of the lawn.
The work finished at 12.45 p.m.
    TOP

04/10/07 Lawn 5 seeding and topdressing programme completed.
Work commenced at 1 p.m. today. It was a glorious sunny aftenoon.
    Volunteers:
Walter Flattery, Geoff Whitaker, Abdul Ahmad, Mike Roberts and Liz Wilson
    Work done:
    a) Seeds scattered on the remainder of the lawn;
    b) Topdressing spread thinly over the seeded area; and,
    c) The drag mat was used to work in the topdressing.
The work finished at 5.30 p.m. The additional help made light work for all.Now we wait for nature to do its bit. The conditions are ideal for germinating the seeds. When the seeds are established winter feed and weed compound will be applied.
    TOP

02/10/07Autumn Lawncare Programme began on Lawn 5.
The autumn lawn care programme commenced today at 10 am. It was overcast but dry. Lawn 5 had been scarified 5 times.
    Volunteers:
Walter Flattery, Geoff Whitaker and Abdul Ahmad.
    Work done:
    a) Seeds scattered on one third of the lawn;
    b) Topdressing spread thinly over the seeded area; and,
    c) The drag mat was used to work in the topdressing.

16/09/07 Jeff Perris' 2nd Report on the Lawns.

A brief inspection was made on 16th September 2007 with Peter Dowdall.

    Observations

Lawn 5 displayed some thin and weak areas but the grass cover on the other Lawns was satisfactory, albeit with some weed in places (particularly Lawn 1).

subsidence at one corner Lawn 2 Levels were generally fair/reasonable although the south-western corner of Lawn 2 appears to fall away very slightly (the photograph shows this). It seems the Club would also like to be able to have the ability to move lawn 2 very slightly towards the southern boundary. Drainage apparently remains satisfactory.

    Discussion

The Lawns are to close at the end of October although league fixtures finish later this month.

Lawn 5 is the area that needs the most attention and if possible should be closed as soon as possible to receive a scarification, overseeding and top dressing programme.

A similar work programme can the go ahead on the other lawns when hopefully they can be gradually taken out of play in October.

The levelling work in the corner of Lawn 2 can be left until November.

    Recommendations

1.Take Lawn 5 out of play immediately and ensure:
    a) Thorough scarification with the Dennis cassette (make 2 passes along the length of the Lawn, the 2nd pass at an angle of approx 15 degrees to the first). Clean up the surface.
    b) Overseed with approx 14Kg of Battersby’s cricket square seed.
    c) Apply approx 1.5 tons of top dressing and work in with the drag mat.
    d) Apply one and a half bags of Battersby’s autumn/winter fertiliser.
    e) When the grass reaches 18mm high trim back to 15 mm and then (if decent growth continues) in stages back to 12 mm. keep topped at this height through the winter.
Do not be concerned if the Lawn looks like a ploughed field after the scarifying!

    2. Gradually take the other Lawns out of play through October (the weakest first). In essence they should receive the programme as Lawn 5 but probably 1 pass with the scarifier, 3–4 Kg of seed, 1 ton of top dressing and then one and a half bags of autumn/winter fertiliser (per lawn) will suffice. Keep mown as directed for lawn 5.

    3. Before work commences on the low corner of Lawn 2 there is a need to take some surface levels. This will show the extent of the area where it is necessary to remove the turf and the amount (depth) of soil needed to build levels up. If there were anybody with simple surveying skills in the Club it would probably take an hour to complete the surveying (I could help if necessary). The levelling works needs to be completed before Christmas

06/08/07 Robert Sagar Completed topdressing Lawn 4.
Time for volunteer effort began to run out quickly. The Musk Cup and The August Tournament are only a few days away. It was necessary to employ the reliable services of Mr Robert Sagar to complete the back breaking task of topdressing Lawn 4. It hardly took him any time to do a first class job combing in several bags of topdressing with the drag mat attached to his sit-on mower.

    02/08/07 Lawn 4 partly Topdressed.
The desired work force didn't appear this morning. Hugh Armitage and Abdul Ahmad comenced work soon after 9 am in clammy conditions. Lawn 4 had greened up nicely from the weed and feed treatment. It was mowed first.
Then 2 bags of topdressing material were transported in a wheel barrow at a time to the lawn, spread manually and brushed thinly over small areas. By 12 noon they managed to cover an area roughly 15 feet by 100 feet.
Robert Sagar had kindly brought his sit-on mower. The drag mat was attached to the mower and the applied topdressing was evenly distributed over the worked area. Time was called at 1pm by the gang of 2!!.
Topdressing the rest of the lawn needs to be accomplished soon.
    TOP

    30/07/07 Lawns 2 and 3 Topdressed.
On Saturday 28th Lawn 2 was topdressed. Lawn 3 was partly topdressed on Sunday. Today the volunteers toiled under a scorching sun to complete the work. Lawn 4 needs the same done to it soon.
Thanks are due to Robert Hall, Geoff Whitaker, Abdul Ahmad, Roy Berry, Barbara Dutton and John Filsak for carrying out the labour intensive task.
Christine Berry gave the entrance area to the Club a makeover whilst the rest were engaged in topdressing. She prunned the hedge and did some weeding.

26/07/07 Latest news on Lawn Maintenance
The club was temporarily without mowing machines last week. The Dennis was written off and the Allett's nylon gears were worn out. We had to borrow Mrs Kathleen Beech's garden Atco mower to cut the lawns for the +50's Tournament. We were able to get the Allett working by last Friday with the help of Keith Pinching and John Douglas. The machine had to be stripped down. The differetial gears were replaced. The 3 days volunteer work resulting has saved the Club a large repair bill.
Yesterday the club received delivery of a Demonstration Dennis FT610 machine directly from the manufacturers. It had been used for 5 hours only. The Dennis Agent spent a good deal of time instructing committee members present on general maintenance and normal use servicing issues.Properly cared for the newly purchased machine which come with 1 year's warranty should last us for a long time.
Today lawns 3 and 4 have been fertilized with a feed and weed compound. They have been taken out of play. Work will commence soon to topdress them ready for the Musk Cup Event.
Lawns 1, 2 and 5 are in use.

06/07/07 Lawn 2 treated with feed and weed fertilizer Today
The sun was shining at around 4 pm today. The ground was wet but firm. Fortunately we have escaped the worst effects of the recent flooding in Earby. A large quantity of the feed and weed compound was applied to the lawn. The foecast ovenight rain should help to work the fertilizer into the ground.
The lawn has now been taken out of use.
Work to apply top dressing to Lawn will be carried out soon. Help will be appreciated from Members.
Lawn 1 and 5 have recovered well from similar treatment. Both now have an even covering of grass. It is intended that the lawns will be prepared this Monday for the forthcoming +50's Tournament.

27/06/07 Lawn 1 Topdressed and over seeded today.
L-R Simon Beech, Geoff Whitaker and Abdul Ahmad Squally showers greeted the team that arrived to carry our the task of topdressing and over seeding lawn 1 at 9.00 this morning. The lawn had greened up nicely since the weed and feed compound was spread on it last week.
The team consisting of Walter Flattery,Geoff Whitaker, Simon Beech, Barbara Dutton, Abdul Ahmad, Rober Hall and John Snowden took 2.5 hours to complete the necessary work.
Approximately 30 bags of topdressing were spread over the lawn and worked in with the newly acquired drag mat. Extra topdressing was applied to areas of visible hollows. These areas were also over seeded. The lawn will be out of use for approximately 5 weeks.

21/06/07 Feed and weed applied to Lawn 1
Conditions this morning were ideal to spread feed and weed compound on lawn 1. It was overcast but dry. Rain was due to arrive in the afternoon. It did! The heavy downpour will hasten up the dispersal of the fertilizer into the ground.
The lawn has now been taken out of use.
Work to apply top dressing to Lawn is scheduled for Wednesday 27 June commencing at 9 a.m. This is intended to level out minor humps and hollows to produce a perfectly even lawn surface. Help will be appreciated from Members.

Report on the Lawns Observations and comments

The Lawns were appraised on 16th March 2007.

The turf has come through the winter satisfactorily. There was a full cover on every Lawn but this did include a little moss in places as well some weed (blemishes which should disappear with some better growth and treatment with selective weedkiller). Localised worm casting was evident in places but this should diminish as the Lawns dry out. Overall I thought that grass density, general appearance and health were good at the time of appraisal.

Having spoken to Peter Dowdell on a regular through the past winter it seems that the Lawns have dealt well with the occasional periods of intense heavy rain. The few water collecting low areas should improve after levelling with topdressing.

The Lawns are in far better condition for mid-late March when compared to the same time last year. Given appropriate treatment over the coming growing season, the Lawns should offer good playing surfaces this season.

    Recommendations
    * The spring fertiliser has been applied (with the exception of a narrow strip along the western side – which I will complete next weekend). Dependent upon weather conditions, there should be adequate growth from this fertilising for 6-8 weeks.

    * Probably about mid May the Lawns should be given some more fertiliser but this time combined with weedkiller, i.e. a weed and feed product. Purchase of this dressing is in hand.

    * 10 tons of top dressing has been ordered and will arrive before the end of the month. The aim should be to give each lawn about 750 Kg of this dressing, thoroughly working in the top dressing with the dragmat that has been ordered (again due to be delivered over the next few days).

    * My advice is to try and rotate usage of the Lawns so that one Lawn is normally out of play to allow work such as topdressing, localised overseeding etc to proceed unhindered. A brief rest would also help worn uneven areas around the hoops to recover. Obviously for particular matches/tournaments all Lawns may need to be in use.

    * As growth improves over the next few weeks, the mowing height should be gradually reduced to 6- 7mm.

    * Worm casts should become les of a problem as the surfaces become a little drier (then the worms will move deeper into the soil for moisture and there will be less casting on the surface). However, there may be a need for some localised wormkilling if the casts remain prolific and persistent (there is some dichlorophen based wormkiller available).

    Other points.
    * When bags of fertiliser or topdressing are delivered it would help if they could be covered with a tarpaulin. Even the slightest pinprick of a polythene bag allows moisture to penetrate, indeed many fertilisers are hydroscopic (that is they actually attract moisture, “cake” and become hard and difficult to spread). There may be a case to consider some kind of lean-to building for storage of materials?

    * Equipment should be properly washed down after use to prolong machinery life/efficiency.
